Lucknow, Mar 20: A number of aspirants who cleared the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) were today lathicharged by the police when they were heading toward the Vidhan Bhawan. Demanding that the state government not cancel the TET examination, the aspirants gathered from all over the state headed toward the Vidhan Bhawan.

They were stopped by the police from proceeding and when the use of water cannons did not disperse them police resorted to baton charge, official sources said. The aspirants under the banner of TET Passed Sangharsh Morcha demanded that they be immediately employed in primary schools as they had cleared the TET examination.

They later sent a memorandum of their demands to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and sat in a dharna at Jhulela Park. The TET exams was held last year after the arrest of then Director Secondary Education Sanjay Mohan due to alleged discrepancies in the exam and taking money for clearing the names of examinees.

For misdeeds of the officers, 72825 TET passed aspirants should not be targeted, Sangharsh Morcha officer bearer Ganesh Dixit asserted.

Samajwadi Party faces its first major law-and-order challenge

Uttar Pradesh's new Samajwadi Party (SP) government Tuesday faced its first major law and order challenge as police and hundreds of TET (Teachers Eligibility Test) candidates demanding immediate recruitment fought pitched battles outside the assembly.

Trouble began when the crowd, carrying placards like "hamare umeed ki cycle aap (you are our bicycle of hope - SP's punchline during the polls)" and shouting anti-SP slogans, started walking towards the Vidhan Sabha and demanded that a senior government functionary talk to them.
They demanded an assurance that there would be an early solution to the TET mess. Pending a probe, announced by the former Mayawati government following charges of large-scale malpractice and favouritism, the selected candidates want the new government to immediately announce their recruitment.
When police officials asked the demonstrators to submit a memorandum and leave, the men and women stuck to their demands following which water cannons were used on the mob. When even that was ineffective, police personnel resorted to canes to disperse the crowd. Eyewitnesses said even the young were brutally hit by the policemen.
As a result, traffic was badly hit on the busy Vidhan Sabha-Railway Station road.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Lucknow Ashutosh Pandey told IANS that no one had been seriously injured and some protesters got minor bruises.

"We tried to pacify the crowd for three hours but they were adamant on surrounding the state assembly building and we were left with no option as the traffic was being jammed and was leading to a situation," said Vijay Bhushan, superintendent of police (East).
TET was conducted by the former Mayawati-led government on Nov 13, 2011 and was aimed at recruiting teachers for primary and upper primary schools. The test had created a lot of hope among the unemployed yet educated masses in Uttar Pradesh.
Of the 11.53 lakh aspirants who appeared for the test, 2.70 lakh candidates successfully qualified the TET. But charges of corruption came soon after the results were announced Nov 26.
After Mayawati ordered a probe, several officials, including Director Basic Education Sanjay Mohan, were arrested and jailed.
In a separate incident, a young man was killed when a member of Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party opened fire at a wedding in Auraiya district, police said Tuesday.

The assailant was identified as Suleman. The deceased was a cousin of the bridegroom. He was hit by a stray bullet in Khanpur when the marriage procession was going for the wedding. Suleman's pistol has been seized.
On Monday, the SP warned trigger-happy supporters after television channels showed them firing in the air while welcoming Amroha legislator Mahboob Ali, now a minister.
After gunfire in Aurayia by a Samajwadi Party (SP) worker killed a youth, a scuffle turned ugly in Kanpur Monday, leading to the killing of an autorickshaw driver by a SP worker.
Police said that both partie were affiliated in "some way or the other to the ruling SP" and the killing was a result of "extortion". The incident took place at Panki when a SP worker allegedly beat a tempo driver to death as the latter refused to pay Rs.300. The deceased has been identified as Ankit Yadav and the assailant has been identified as Prashant Tiwari.
Superintended of Police (Crime) Ashfaq Ahmad told IANS that both parties involved were from the SP and the murder was an outcome of a heated argument over extortion. Local SP leaders however said that Tiwari, who runs a hotel in the area, beat the tempo driver to death in a fit of anger after he refused to cough up "parking fees". He was hit by sticks and iron rods after which he collapsed and died on way to a hospital.
While local party leaders refused to comment on the incident party spokesman Rajendra Chowdhary also gave a muted response and said that he will "enquire tomorrow on what the incident actually was."
